New Rare Non-Combat Pet - Captured Firefly

As of Patch 2.1, there is a new non-combat pet called a Captured Firefly. It only drops off the Bogflare Needlers in Zangarmarsh. They are a yellow and blue-grayish wasp that can be found north of Serpent Lake.

I can confirm that the item exists because I went out there and killed wasps for a good 30 minutes everyday for nearly a week and had one finally drop. Please note that the drop rate is extremely low. With a drop rate this low, and an item that is an Outland only monster that you can use without the expansion, this will probably be a nice collector's item and very much sought after. If you happen to get a few, I'm sure you could sell them on the AH for anywhere between 700-1000g.

The animation of this rare pet is fantastic but the sound it makes can be a little on the loud side I must say. Nevertheless... Happy Hunting!

Beast Mastery Hunter Guide from 1-70

Please bear with me cause this is going to be super duper ultra LONG post specially for Sir Huma the Hunter. The original author for this guide is cheesekate so contact him if you have any questions.

Well here goes... Hunters have great ranged potential and they can do a whole lot of damage with their ranged abilities if specced properly. However, this guide is about being a Beast Master Hunter. You're going to have to sacrifice those juicy Marksmanship talents (maybe entirely) for Beast Mastery talents so prepare yourself.

Okay, first things first; where are your talent points going to go? Since you're going to be loading up on Beast Mastery talents, that's what you're going to start out. With the talent re-work in the last major patch, you have two choices to utilize when it comes to putting talent points in your other two trees: Marksman and Survival. If you are more interested in doing as much damage as possible, you're going to make a quick -- QUICK! -- jump over to the Marksman tree after you get your core Beast Mastery skills down. If you are more interested in a balance between more damage and more survivability, you'll make that quick jump over to the Survival tree instead. You will be returning to the Beast Mastery tree and you will utilize a little bit of the Survival tree no matter what method you choose. Now, I know it's tempting to do more in Marksman but use the Force, Luke. Resist the Dark Side. So here we go:


Start in the Beast Mastery tree:
* 1. 5/5 Endurance Training (levels 10-14)
* 2. 3/3 Thick Hide (levels 15-17)
* 3. 2/2 Focused Fire (levels 18 & 19)
* 4. 5/5 Unleashed Fury (levels 20-24)

Since we can only level to level 60 right now, you will have 1 talent point left. Since 1 talent point doesn't help out a whole lot, you can put it in any skill in any tree that you want.

If you skills that will be as useful as possible to you now, I would recommend putting it in either Bestial Swiftness or Animal Handler in your Beast Mastery tree. Both of these skills show an improvement with just 1 point and it's a significant improvement compared to the other skills you will have to choose from.

Personally, I would recommend putting your left over point in either Humanoid Slaying in the Survival tree or Lethal Shots in the Marksman tree since that's where you'll pick up once you can level to level 70. Also, it will save you the cost of a re-spec since you can just pick right up. If you are into PvP, I would recommend using your points in Survivalist. If you're a raider/solo grinder, you could go either way. Do you want to do more damage or do you want to do a balanced combination of more damage and more survivability? That's what it comes down to.

Once Burning Crusade is released on January 16th, 2007, we will be able to level to 70. Now, if you are already level 60, I would recommend distributing your talent points in the following way:

Pick up where you left off in the Marksman tree (if you want to do as much damage as possible):

* 5/5 Lethal Shots (levels 61-64 [because we already had a point in it at level 60])
* 5/5 Efficiency (levels 65-69)
* Aimed Shot (level 70)


Pick up where you left off in the Survival tree (if you want a balance between more damage and more survivability):

* 3/3 Humanoid Slaying (levels 61 & 62 [because we already had a point in it at level 60])
* 3/3 Monster Slaying (levels 63-65)
* 3/3 Improved Wing Clip (levels 66-68)
* 2/5 Survivalist (levels 69 & 70)


If you are starting a new level 1 hunter because you're in love with the sassy Blood Elves or the exotic Draenei, here's how I'd recommend distributing your points:

Start in the Beast Mastery tree:

* 3. 2/2 Focused Fire (levels 18 & 19)

Whether you follow my build suggestions exactly or you decide to modify them to your own liking, remember this: talent hopping too much is going to gimp your build. You want to focus primarily on one tree and make a secondary focus on another. The third tree you can put a couple of points in but I wouldn't exceed a couple of points. You want somewhere around 35-40+ in your primary tree, 10-20 in your secondary tree, and the remainder in whichever tree you choose -- even your third tree. For the record, my spec is currently 47/0/4 and will be 47/0/14 when I am level 70.

Now that you know your path, it's time to discuss the powers that you and your pet will be wielding. Here's the part where we're going to break down your talents. Most of them are pretty self-explanatory but I'll add in any comments I have about the talents after the talent's description. Ready? Good. Let's tackle your Beast Mastery talents first.

1. Endurance Training

Increases the health of your pets. Rank 1 increases it by 3%, Rank 2 increases it by 6%, Rank 3 increases it by 9%, Rank 4 increases it by 12%, and Rank 5 increases it by 15%.

This talent is especially useful if you're a fan of raptors, crabs, and crocolisks. These pets have low health to begin with and a 15% boost will be good for them.

2. Thick Hide

Increases the armor rating of your pets. Rank 1 increases it by 10%, Rank 2 increases it by 20%, and Rank 3 increases it by 30%.

This talent is especially good for gorillas, tallstriders, cats, spiders, bats, owls, and windserpents because all of those animals have a low armor rating by default.

3. Improved Revive Pet

Reduces the casting time, mana cost, and increases the health your pet returns with when you use your Revive Pet skill. Rank 1 reduces your casting time by 3 seconds, your mana cost by 20%, and increases the health your pet returns with by 15%. Rank 2 reduces your casting time by 6 seconds, your mana cost by 40%, and increases the health your pet returns with by 30%.

This is a great talent all around. The more your Revive Pet skill's casting time is reduced, the faster your can revive your pet; the more the mana cost is reduced, the less time you have to wait before reviving your pet; the more health your pet receives when it's revived, the sooner you can get back to what you were doing. This is a talent that gets you back on your feet and on your way as quickly as possible.

4. Unleashed Fury

Increases the damage done by your pets. Rank 1 increases it by 3%, Rank 2 increases it by 6%, Rank 3 increases it by 9%, Rank 4 increases it by 12%, and Rank 5 increases it by 15%.

This talent is especially great if you have a cat, raptor, spider, bat, owl, or windserpent because those animals have a high DPS rating to begin with. This talent will enable them to hit fast and even harder than they would without the talent boost.

5. Ferocity

This talent increases the critical strike chance of your pets. Rank 1 increases it by 3%, Rank 2 increases it by 6%, Rank 3 increases it by 9%, Rank 4 increases it by 12%, and Rank 5 increases it by 15%.

This talent can really go without saying but I'll say it anyway: any increase to your chance or your pet's chance to get a critical strike = teh win!

6. Improved Mend Pet

This talent gives your Mend Pet skill a chance to cleanse curse, disease, magic, or poison effect from your pet each tick. Rank 1 gives you a 15% chance and Rank 2 gives you a 50% chance.

This talent is incredibly useful during battle. You can cleanse your pet nearly every time it gets infected and keeping your pet cleansed prolongs the amount of time it can live during a battle. I suggest stinging and stunning or wing-clipping your opponent(s) before using Mend Pet because you won't be able to fight while healing your pet.

7. Intimidation

Commands your pet to intimidate your target on the next successful melee attack, causing a high amount of threat and stunning the target for 3 seconds.

8. Spirit Bond

While your pet is active, you and your pet will regenerate health. At Rank 1 you and your pet will regenerate 1% of total health every 10 seconds and at Rank 2 you and your pet will regenerate 2% of total health every 10 seconds.

While it may not seem like much, trust me -- you're going to appreciate the regeneration because it decreases your down-time in-between battles.

9. Frenzy

Gives your pet a chance to gain a 30% attack speed increase for 8 seconds after dealing a critical strike. Rank 1 gives you a 20% chance, Rank 2 gives you a 40% chance, Rank 3 gives you a 60% chance, Rank 4 gives you a 80% chance, and Rank 5 gives you a 100% chance.

10. Bestial Wrath

Send your pet into a rage causing 100% additional damage for 15 seconds. While enrages, your pet cannot be stopped by any means.

Honestly, nothing is better than having a GIANT RED WOLF at your side.

11. Bestial Discipline

Increases the focus regeneration of your pet. Rank 1 increases it by 10% and Rank 2 increases it by 20%.

12. Eyes of the Beast

Increases the duration of your Eyes of the Beast. Rank 1 increases it by 30 seconds and Rank 2 increases it by 60 seconds.

You can become your pet for a period of time and use that to your advantage. You can attract all the aggro to lead your group of friends through a badly infested area or you can stealth (if your pet is a cat) and sneak up on people. The possibilities where this is useful are endless.

This is especially useful in boss pulling in instances. I have pulled for Sere Vala in Molten Core a number of times and it's gone a lot smoother when I used my trusty wolf pet, Antica, to engage Gheddon and Shaz. It bought the raid a little more time and I actually got to survive and fight along with my guild.

13. Improved Aspect of the Hawk

Increases your chance of increasing ranged attack speed on all of your normal ranged attacks by 30% for 8 seconds. Rank 1 gives you a 1% chance, Rank 2 gives you a 2% chance, Rank 3 gives you a 3% chance, Rank 4 gives you a 4% chance, and Rank 5 gives you a 5% chance. Remember, this only applies if you have your Aspect of the Hawk active.

This is a great talent for a Beast Master Hunter because you'll be mostly ranged since your pet will act as a melee weapon for you. Anything that improves your attacks is great. Now, I know that saying that might raise the question of, "Why not go into Marksmanship then?" You'll need the majority of your points to beef up your pet with talents in your Beast Mastery tree. Don't worry though, you'll have enough points left over to get some really good Marksmanship talents that will aid both you and your pet.

14. Focused Fire

All damage caused by you is increased while your pet is active and the critical strike chance of your Kill Command ability is increased, too. Rank 1 increases your damage by 1% and your critical strike chance by 10%. Rank 2 increases your damage by 2% and your critical strike chance by 20%.

15. Catlike Reflexes

Increases your and your pet's chance to dodge. Rank 1 increases your pet's chance by 3% and yours by 1%, Rank 2 increases your pet's by 6% and yours by 2%, and Rank 3 increases your pet's by 9% and yours by 3%.

16. Ferocious Inspiration

Your party members will have their damage increased by a percentage when your pet scores a critical hit. Rank 1 increases their damage by 1% for 10 seconds, Rank 2 increases it by 2% for 10 seconds, and Rank 3 increases it by 3% for 10 seconds.

This is a very useful skill if you're going to be a PvPer or a raider. Your party members will thank you for this, especially if you have a wolf/worg buffing them with Furious Howl 4 (will be addressed later in the guide).

17. Serpent's Swiftness

Increases your ranged combat attack speed and your pet's melee attack speed. Rank 1 increases both by 4%, Rank 2 increases both by 8%, Rank 3 increases both by 12%, Rank 4 increases both by 16%, and Rank 5 increases both by 20%.

18. The Beast Within

When your pet is under the effects of Bestial Wrath, you will automatically go into a rage. You will cause 30% additional damage for 18 seconds. While enraged, you do not feel pity, remorse, or fear. You cannot be stopped unless killed.

Come on, what's better than GIANT RED WOLF and GIANT RED NUKUMI? That's right! Nothing!

Okay, Beast Mastery is done. How about Marksmanship now? Ready? Okay!

1. Efficiency

Reduces the mana cost of your shots and stings. Rank 1 reduces it by 2%, Rank 2 reduces it by 4%, Rank 3 reduces it by 6%, Rank 4 reduces it by 8%, and Rank 5 reduces it by 10%.

2. Lethal Shots

Increases your critical strike chance with ranged weapons. Rank 1 increases it by 1%, Rank 2 increases it by 2%, Rank 3 increases it by 3%, Rank 4 increases it by 4%, and Rank 5 increases it by 5%.

3. Aimed Shot

An aimed shot that increases ranged damage by 70.

And Survival? Here we go!

1. Hawk Eye

Increased the range of your ranged weapons. Rank 1 increases it by 2 yards, Rank 2 increases it by 4 yards, and Rank 3 increases it by 6 yards.

If you're a puller for any instance, get this skill. It helps.

2. Humanoid Slaying

Increases your regular damage and critical damage against humanoids. Rank 1 increases both by 1%, Rank 2 increases both by 2%, and Rank 3 increases both by 3%.

3. Monster Slaying

Increases your regular damage and critical damage against beasts, giants, and dragonkin. Rank 1 increases both by 1%, Rank 2 increases both by 2%, and Rank 3 increases both by 3%.

4. Improved Wing Clip

Increases the chance that your Wing Clip ability will immobilize your target for 5 seconds. Rank 1 gives you a 7% chance, Rank 2 gives you a 14% chance, and Rank 3 gives you a 20% chance.

5. Survivalist

Increases your total health. Rank 1 increases it by 2%, Rank 2 increases it by 4%, Rank 3 increases it by 6%, Rank 4 increases it by 8%, and Rank 5 increases it by 10%.

Not only do you have to worry about where to place your own talents, you have to worry about what skills you want your pet(s) to have. I highly recommend using all three of your pet "slots" and making three different builds that will be of various uses to you. That way, you will have a pet for nearly every occasion. Base your builds on things you like to do in-game. A build I suggest that all Hunters (regardless of their play-style) have is the tank. Turtles and Scorpids make good tanks because they have a high armor rating and a medium amount of hit points (HP); however, they have a low DPS rating. Some boars can have a high armor rating and a high amount of hit points (normally, they have a medium armor rating and a medium amount of hit points) but that is dependent on the species of the boar. Wolves, Hyenas, and Carrions are well-rounded animals because they have a medium amount of hit points, a medium armor rating, and a medium DPS rating. Personally, I have a Ghostpaw Runner and I am very satisfied with her performance. Having a tank makes it easier for you to solo things and grind experience on your own.

You have 300 points to distribute over 17 skills (Great Stamina, Natural Armor, Arcane Resistance, Fire Resistance, Frost Resistance, Nature Resistance, Shadow Resistance, Cower, Bite, Claw, Dash, Dive, Prowl, Screech, Scorpid Poison, Furious Howl, and Growl) available to you for your pet. Your pet gains points through levels and loyalty. If you tame a level 60 pet, you will get your points as your pet goes through loyalty levels with you. Once your pet has level 6 loyalty to you, you will be able to distribute all of its 300 points. You can untrain and re-train your pet's skills just like you can your own. If you untrain your pet's skills but you don't have any points to use, store your pet in the stable, and then retrieve it. You should see all of your points there after you retrieve your pet. Pets may start with a negative number of points if they already know some skills when tamed. When training skills, you will get the difference between ranks. For example, if your pet already has Bite 4 and you train Bite 5, you will only spend 3 training points even though Bite 4 costs 10 and Bite 5 costs 13.

When I am learning a skill from a newly tamed beast, I always take them into combat with me until I've learned the skill. Before that, I make sure they are happy by feeding them. I learn new skills pretty and have never really had any problems doing so; however, if you are having trouble learning a skill from a newly tamed beast, here are some things that you can try:

* Turn off any other skills on your pet's bar aside from the one you want to learn. You want the skill to be used as often as possible and eliminating all others ensures that all of your pet's focus will go toward the skill you want to learn.
* Have your newly tamed beast fight solo against easy mobs. Stand directly next to it and heal it if necessary but do not fight the mob yourself even if you get attacked by it.
* Continually click the skill button for the skill you want to learn. Again, eliminate all other skills from the bar so that your newly tamed beast is not using any other skill but the one you want to learn. Prowl and Furious Howl can be learned out of combat so this approach is perfect for learning those.


Now, before I get too far ahead here, let's break down the skills that your pet(s) can have, shall we? Alright! Let's talk about the skills you can learn from Pet Trainers first (Great Stamina, Natural Armor, all resistances, and Growl).

1. Great Stamina

Increases your pet's stamina (health points = 10*stamina).

3. Growl

Taunts your target, which increases the chance that it will focus on your pet. Growl 1 and Growl 2 are taught through the "Taming the Beast" quest (located in Dun Morogh, Durotar, Mulgore, and Teldrassil) and all the rest of the ranks of Growl are taught by Pet Trainers. No training points are necessary and there is a new rank every 10 levels.

4. Resistances

Increases your pet's arcane, fire, frost, nature, or shadow resistance. All resistances must be trained separately.

Okay, now that the easily achieved pet skills have been discussed, it's time for the more difficult ones. Some of your pet's skills can only be achieved through taming a beast that possesses the needed skill and fighting with that beast until a message pops up and tells you that you have learned a new skill. So let's check out those skills (Cower, Bite, Claw, Dash, Dive, Prowl, Screech, Scorpid Poison, and Furious Howl).

1. Cower

Can by learned by all beasts. Lowers your pet's threat, which makes your pet less likely to be attacked by your enemies.

2. Bite

Can be used by cats, raptors, bears, wolves, hyenas, boars, carrions, turtles, crocolisks, spiders, gorillas, windserpents, tallstriders, and bats. Your pet will bite your enemy, causing extra damage.

* Bite 1: Bite the enemy, causing 7 to 9 damage.

Now, let's discuss Bite 8 a little bit because Bite 8 and Furious Howl 4 are the most difficult pet skills to get. You have to go to Lower Blackrock Spire and tame the Bloodaxe Worgs that are in the instance. There is a walk-through on how to do it solo located at petopia.brashendeavors.net; however, I attempted to solo it last night and found it extremely difficult and frustrating. I couldn't get past the first room. Because of that, I highly recommend organizing a Lower Blackrock Spire run with some other players when you attempt to tame these guys.

Before you go in to tame yourself a Bloodaxe Worg, get a trash pet. I recommend getting something that has Screech 4 since that's an area effect skill. I also recommend taking the time to train your trash pet as far into Growl as you can. While it is just a trash pet, it will keep the aggro much better if it's trained in Growl. Besides, Growl is a free skill from Pet Trainers now.

3. Claw

Can be used by owls, carrions, crabs, cats, raptors, scorpids, and bears. Your pet will claw your enemy, causing extra damage.

Okay, that's where you get your pet's skills. I would recommend getting every single one of these skills even if you never plan on having a scorpid, bat, etc. If you get every one of these skills, you'll be safe if you ever change your mind in the future. For the skills that you have to tame beasts for and learn that way, learn all the ranks even if you pet is above a certain rank. If you have Bite 1 and Bite 2 and then you are able to get Bite 7, you will have exactly three ranks of Bite: Bite 1, Bite 2, and Bite 7. Bite 3-6 is not going to automatically appear just because you jumped from Bite 2 to Bite 7. Believe me, it may not seem like a big deal if you have a high level pet but what if you decide to get a low level pet in the future? It will be doing much less damage than it could be doing. Again, it's better to play it safe than sorry. Get all ranks of a pet skill.

So what are some of the best pet builds you can make? Well, let me make some suggestions to you! As I stated previously, one build that I would recommend no matter what your play-style is, is a tank. So let's talk about "The Tank" first.

If you want a pure tank, you can train your pet in Growl 7, Natural Armor 10, and Great Stamina 9. This will allow your pet to taunt your target as much as possible and gives it a bonus of 1,000 armor and 32 stamina. Personally, I prefer to boost my pet's fighting abilities instead of focusing purely on its armor, hit-points, and stamina. You can still boost your pet's armor, hit-points, and stamina significantly while boosting their fighting abilities, too. You could do Growl 7, Natural Armor 10, Great Stamina 7, Dash 3, and Bite 8/Claw 8. This increases your stamina by 21 and your armor by 1,000 and it also increases your pet's movement speed and gives it some extra damage. If you have a cat for your pet, I'd highly suggest getting Prowl 3 so that your cat can stealth. You will have to either sacrifice Dash 3 or Bite 8 (while cats can use Claw, Bite gives more damage). Since cats have a high DPS rating, your cat will still do quite a bit of damage; however, if movement speed isn't as important as damage to you, you should sacrifice Dash 3 and stick with Bite 8. This kind of build makes your pet an offensive tank.

If you would rather have a defensive tank, you'll want to take a slightly different approach. You'll want to choose from wolves, owls, bats, and carrions. If you choose a wolf, you can train it in Growl 7, Great Stamina 7, Natural Armor 10, and Furious Howl 4. You'll have 25 points left over after that so you'll have to decide which is more important to you: speed or damage. If it's damage, train your wolf in Bite 8. If it's speed, train your pet in Dash 3. If you choose an owl, bat, or carrion, you can train it in Growl 7, Great Stamina 7, Natural Armor 10, and Screech 4. Again, it's up to you if you want to use your remaining 25 points for Dive 3 or Bite 8/Claw 8.

If you're into PVP, I would recommend getting a cat for your PVP pet so that you can utilize stealth. I would also recommend focusing on your pet's resistances. Train your pet up to Rank 4 in the two most commonly used damage types (choose from Arcane, Frost, Fire, Nature, and Shadow - I think the two most commonly used are Fire and Nature but I could be wrong). Train the remaining three resistances up to Rank 2. You'll get a 120 resistance boost on the two most commonly used and a 60 resistance boost on the remaining three. At this point, if you have a cat, you will have 50 points left over. If you have a pet that's not a cat, you will have 75 points left over. Those 50-75 points are up to your preference. Is speed important to you? Train Dive 3 or Dash 3. Is damage important to you? Train Bite 8 or Claw 8. Is stamina important to you? Train your pet up in stamina as far as you can. Is armor important to you? Train your pet up in armor as far as you can. Personally, if I made a PVP cat, I would use my remaining 50 points for Dash 3 and Bite 8. If I made a non-cat PVP pet, I would use a wolf, bat, owl, or carrion and I would use my remaining 75 points for Furious Howl 4/Screech 4, Dash 3, and Bite 8/Claw 8. Of course you'll want to train Growl 7 even if taunting doesn't help in PVP simply because it's free and you'll never know when it might come in handy.

Just to elaborate a little bit more on pet builds, I'll share the three I plans on making.

The Ultimate Pet... Fel Reaver

This is so extremely funny and super fun when it works that I just have to share with you guys.

Almost everyone has seen the Fel Reaver running around in the Outlands, and may or may not have killed or been killed by it, nevertheless, you can tell it packs a punch!


First, you must be an Engineer with at least 125 skill level and go to shimmering flats and buy the schematic for Gnomish Universal Remote.

Next create it and head on down to the Outlands, if all works as planned, this should happen:


Do bear in mind that it doesn't work all the time but when it DOES... my god it is pure EVIL FUN! I shall leave it to your imagination on what you can do with this... Have Fun!

Where to Get Non-Combat Pets

Cats

Location: Elwynn Forest, Northshire

Directions: Follow the road southwest out of Northshire Abbey (the humanstarting area) and look for a house off the road on your right. You'll knowit's the right house when you see a large number of cats running around inside and outside.

Kittens
Varieties: White
Location: Stormwind
Vendor: Lil Timmy
Cost: 60s
Directions: It is rumored that Lil Timmy is a rare spawn that walks around the canal in Stormwind who sells white kittens. They are half the size of the regular cats.

Rabbits
Varieties: Snowshoe
Location: Dun Morogh, Amberstill Ranch
Vendor: Yarlyn Amberstill
Cost: 20s
Directions: The Amberstill Ranch is northwest of the Gol'bolar Quarry. There will be a corral with rams in it, and a young girl running around chasing a rabbit. Catch the young girl and talk to her to purchase your own rabbit. This is also where you get the "Protecting the Herd" quest.

Owls

Directions: Enter Darnassus from the road from Dolanaar and look for the owl vendor on your left next to a food vendor.

Directions: Coming off the dock from the boat from Ratchet, look for the parrot vendor in the first building to your left.

Directions: The snake vendor should be wandering around in the Valley of Spirit.

How to Get a Cross-Faction Pet
Many vendored pets are available only in factioned cities or towns from factioned NPCs, leaving those not of that faction unable to purchase one by normal means. Since trades and mail are not allowed between members of the opposite faction, the only way to get yourself a cross-faction pet is through the Auction House in Gadgetzan.
